The quickest and most cost-effective loft conversion is to install skylight windows. This means that there is no change to your roof-line. Velux works best when there is sufficient headroom throughout your attic so you can make full use of the floor space.

A Velux loft conversion requires less construction work than a dormer loft conversion or other types of attic conversions. Therefore this can be completed within 2-4 weeks, depending on the size of project. You could be enjoying your new bedroom, office or playroom within weeks from initial design stage.

A Velux loft conversion works best for lofts with enough standing space. Ideally 2.3 meters or more from top of the ceiling joists to underside of the roof ridge. As long as all structural requirements are met, your home will be suitable.

Dormer Conversion

A dormer loft conversion opens up your roof space that that extends outwards from the existing sloping roof. Building a dormer on your existing roof gives additional headroom and floor space, with added light from dormer windows or even French doors.

Dormer built structures are usually situated at the back of your property, though smaller and more traditional dormers can be designed, approved and built on the front of your roof. Thanks to the large windows and additional head height created by a dormer, your loft conversion will have plenty of room so you can move around easily.

IS MY LOFT SUITABLE FOR A DORMER LOFT CONVERSION?

A dormer loft conversion usually requires a minimum headroom of 2.3m from top of the ceiling joists to underside of the roof ridge. If you have a `hipped’ roof (a roof with a sloping end) there may not be enough space to construct a full width dormer conversion.

Hip to Gable

Where your roof has more than two sloping sides, it is referred to as ‘hipped’. These roofs limit the space and support available for loft conversions, which means that a hip-to-gable conversion is necessary.

If you want a loft conversion but your attic space is limited by a hip-ended roofline, then a hip to gable loft conversion is the answer. By changing the sloping or ‘hipped’ roof to create a vertical gable end, built in materials to match your existing property you will benefit by having substantial amount of additional floor space in your loft. A rear dormer can also be added to your property to give you an even larger usable space.

IS MY HOME SUITABLE FOR A HIP TO GABLE LOFT CONVERSION?

This type of loft conversion is usually only suitable for semi-detached or detached houses with hipped roofs.
